A NEW lighting system created under ACARP funding is providing safe illumination in hazardous longwall environments, according to the CSIRO.
According to developers, the LightPipe technology was initiated to provide a more versatile lighting system for use on underground machinery such as shearers, continuous miners and shuttle cars.
The system comprises an LED ‘light engine’ made of multiple high-power light emitting diodes that are mounted within a compact flameproof enclosure.
Light is transmitted from the enclosure along the flexible optic fibres, and a glass lens mounted on a brass end-cap provides additional protection. The light can also be extended up to 10m away from the enclosure.
According to the CSIRO, the illumination device minimises safety risks in hazardous areas, as it does not contain any electrical components.
The product also operates at low temperature and is not subject to failure by heat shock or cold water spray.
