WorkSafe Victoria Awards 2009 rewards safety innovations

TWO organisations, a DHS youth justice program, and a Health and Safety Representative from inner city Melbourne have all been named finalists in the prestigious WorkSafe Victoria Awards 2009.

The WorkSafe Victoria Awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution to improving health and safety in their workplace.

The awards are a highlight of Work Safe Week which runs from 26 and 30 October and features more than 100 free seminars and events. For the full calendar and to register for Work Safe Week activities go to worksafe.vic.gov.au/worksafeweek.

The Victorian Arts Centre, Delta-V Experts, a program for Youth Justice Custodial Services DHS, and Karen Linstrom from RMIT University, have all been nominated for Awards in four separate categories. (Background information below).

The Victorian Arts Centre is a finalist in the category Health and Safety Committee of the Year, which acknowledges the various ways organisations manage and improve workplace health and safety. They are one of five contenders for the title this year.

Delta-V Experts, a forensic engineering and safety solutions consultancy, is a finalist in the category Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk. Their high performance Swan Rollover Protection Structure, which can be retrofitted to a wide range of light fleet vehicles to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover, has earned the business its nomination. The unit is suitable for use in the mining industry. They are one of three finalists in the category.

Youth Justice Custodial Services DHS is a finalist in the category Best Strategy for Health and Safety Management for the development of their Clinical Group Supervision program which aims to reduce the risk of stress, vicarious trauma and burnout among staff. They are one of two finalists in the category, which acknowledges the various ways that organisations manage and improve workplace health and safety.

Karen Linstrom from RMIT’s School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning is a finalist in the category Health and Safety Representative of the Year. She is one of four finalists in the category, which acknowledges health and safety representatives who have made a difference to health and safety within their designated work group.

WorkSafe’s Executive Director of Health and Safety, John Merritt says the four finalists were selected from 118 applications received from across the state.

‘Each has shown their commitment to achieving better health and safety outcomes. Whether it’s across industries or for a specific industry or workplace, it’s something to celebrate.’

Merritt claims the overall recipient in each category of the Awards would be announced at the 21st Annual WorkSafe Victoria Awards Dinner on 29 October at Crown Palladium.

‘The Awards Dinner is a great night. It showcases health and safety in an exciting arena and is an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate the outstanding leadership of others in the community,’ Mr Merritt said.

Tickets to the WorkSafe Victoria Awards are now on sale and people are encouraged to purchase tickets early.

Tickets are $140 + GST and can be purchased online at worksafe.vic.gov.au/worksafeweek There is a 10% discount for booking a table of 10.

The Awards Dinner features a showcase of cutting edge safety innovations, the presentation of Awards, five-course dinner and live music.

Shane Jacobson, star of newly released Australian film, Charlie & Boots is hosting the event.
