Working standards ‘seriously flawed’

THE Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) has warned that award working standards are “seriously flawed” and need to be addressed immediately.

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) awards are designed to streamline and simplify work standards and set a minimum requirement for enterprise agreements.

However, the industry has expressed concerns the awards will threaten workplace rostering flexibility at a time when it could help companies to survive the current economic crisis.

AMMA Spokesperson, Minna Knight says the mining award and the Government’s 10 national employment standards, which take effect in 2010, could stop employees working 12-hour shifts.

According to the AMMA, restrictions on annual leave could also create difficulty for fly-in, fly-out employees with inconsistent rosters.
