WA govt need to review mining policies: AMEC

THE Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) has called on the next state government to restore Western Australia’s mining policy reputation.

AMEC says the state’s fall in status correlates with the “worst decline in mineral exploration investment”, which will have serious consequences for the future economy.

The mining lobby group says the government needs to address its approvals processes and counter increased competition for exploration investments from other states. It should also assess exploration incentives and ways to retain staff.

AMEC's calls are echoed by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME), which says a state policy ensuring safe and long-term competitiveness of the industry needs to be considered in the lead-up to the 6 September election.

The CME also supports the introduction of an emissions trading scheme to protect WA’s export sector until other countries come on board.
