Vehicle collision prompts safety alert

A SAFETY alert has been issued after a rear dump truck collided with a light vehicle at a mine ramp intersection.

The rear wheels of a Caterpillar 789 dump truck crushed the front section and passenger side of a Toyota Landruiser, trapping the driver inside.

The operator sustained minor injuries and was freed from the light vehicle using cutting equipment.

Investigations suggest the gradient of the intersection and a blind spot in the dump truck drivers’ vision caused the accident.

The Department of Mines and Energy (DME) [www.dme.qld.gov.au] inspectorate is urging mines to perform risk assessments on all intersections and install proximity detection devices to vehicles to minimise hazards.
