Vatskalis on uranium: the ‘bloody licence’

RESOURCES Minister Kon Vatskalis has come under attack from more than one hundred residents over planned uranium exploration near Alice Springs.

Families for a Nuclear Free Future (FFANFF) and the Alice Springs Angela Pamela Collective (ASAP) have asked the minister to revoke the Angela-Pamela exploration licence awarded to miners Cameco-Paladin. They cited leaks at the Ranger uranium mine in Kakadu that occurred in spite of approvals and claimed that the move jeopardised safety.

Vatskalis disputed the occurrence of contamination at Ranger and says he will not revoke the exploration licence if in power, and supported Northern Territory Government approval processes.

When one group accused the Minister of handing out licenses to anyone he replied, "Nobody gets a bloody licence here unless they comply with what we say."
