Unions to push mine safety in Pilbara mining re-establishment

UNIONS hope to push safety as a major issue in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, following the second mining death in a month.

The region recently posted record growth, which has prompted moves to re-establish mining in the area.

The recent death of a 29-year-old miner at a Yandi mine site has prompted unions to concentrate on mine safety in the region.

However, the majority of unions associated with mining do not have right-of-entry provisions for most Pilbara mine sites.

The WA Australian Workers Union (AWU) is working with other unions to rebuild a stronger presence in the Pilbara.
