Union claims new mining safety laws are too sudden

CFMEU Mining and Energy Union state secretary Gary Wood has warned that the mining industry is not ready to take on the newly introduced system of hazard management based on risk.

Wood claims the unions and industry should have been consulted because the strategy requires a major structural change.

The union claims it will work with the Government on workers safety, but it is imperative that any new model is jointly developed and implemented with a steering group to ensure that safety standards are maintained throughout the transition.

The group would be comprised of union and industry official that would make sure the proposed changes to mine safety reach the workers who face risks on a daily basis, is urgently needed.
