THE Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the U.S has unveiled a new safety initiative designed to highlight the leading causes of mine fatalities in the 21st century.

The MSHA is developing a Safety Targets Training program to address the most common causes of repeat fatal accidents which occurred between 2000 and 2008.

According to the authority, the program will boost awareness of risks within the workplace to avoid accidents from re-occurring.

Ten training modules will address 20 topics accounting for 75% of the fatalities which occurred in the targeted nine-year period.

According to the MSHA, the most common cause of mining fatalities is fall from elevations, operating equipment, maintenance, equipment collisions and communication break-downs.
