THE MINISTER for Employment and Workplace Relations, Julia Gillard, has welcomed a Liberal Party back down and the passage of the Safe Work Australia Bill through the Australian Parliament.

The Act was passed by the Senate without amendment on 7 September 2009.

Gillard says the act delivers on the Rudd Government’s election commitment to create a new national body to lead and improve occupational health and safety (OHS) and workers’ compensation arrangements in Australia.

The creation of Safe Work Australia is an important step towards achieving harmonised occupational health and safety laws across Australia.

Harmonised OHS laws are essential to the Rudd Government’s aim of a streamline national economy to drive productivity in the future.
