THE Tasmanian government has announced a new Code of Practice to boost safety standards in underground mining operations.

The “Applicable Standards for Underground Mining and Associated Operations” code came into effect on 05 November 2008 to provide mine operators with guidelines to optimise health and safety standards.

Minister for Planning and Workpalce Relations, Graeme Sturges, says the legislation delivers practical information on safety management systems, risk management, and the application of exposure standards for atmospheric contaminants.

The code incorporates a number of national standards and guidelines that were recommended by the coronial inquest into the deaths of three miners at Tasmania’s Renison mine in 2000.

"Mine workers and their families need to know that everything possible has been done to ensure a safe working environment,” said Mr Sturges.

The code is now available on the Workplace Standards Tasmania website.
