Study probes water quality in Queensland mines

THE Queensland government will conduct further studies on all mine sites that discharged water after flooding earlier in 2008.

The move follows concerns about the water quality in the Fitzroy River in central Queensland.

Queensland sustainability minister, Andrew McNamara, says the study will examine traces of copper, zinc, aluminium and selenium.

It will also investigate any threats to biodiversity and look at cumulative impacts of salt from the Ensham mine.

McNamara says the initiative will provide an opportunity to better understand the impact of mines. The study is expected to be completed later in 2008, and results will be made publicly available.
