Storm season prompts safety alert

THE Department of Mines and Energy (DME) is urging mines to ensure the safety of workers during extreme weather after two miners were seriously injured from high winds in Queensland.

According to the DME, the two workers suffered severe injuries when the crib hut they were using as sheltering was blown over in high winds at a mine in Queensland.

The Inspectorate says the incident should serve as a reminder of the dangers of extreme weather and mines should ensure emergency procedures are put in place.

Mines and quarries are being prompted to review their procedures for adverse weather events and ensure they have evacuation procedures and sufficient shelter in place.
