THE DEATH of the 117th worker in a South African mine this year has angered unions and sparked serious concerns for mine site health and safety.
The miner was killed while operating a long haul vehicle in a rock-related accident at Kroondal platinum mine on 5 September 2008.
Trackless equipment operations have been suspended at the shaft while drivers of load haul dump vehicles are re-trained.
The minerals and energy safety and health inspectorate has carried out an investigation.
The number of mine deaths is slightly down in 2008 compared with last year.
