THE DEPARTMENT of Mines and Petroleum has released a safety warning following a fatal accident at underground mine.

On 19 May 2009 at about 11:45pm, a mine worker received fatal injuries when he and his loader fell into a stope at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher mine near Mount Isa in North West Queensland. At the time of the accident, back filling operations were being carried out.

A team of Mines Inspectorate officers from the Mount Isa and Townsville offices travelled to the site on 20 May 2009 to begin investigations.

A detailed nature and cause report into the accident will be prepared and submitted to the Chief Inspector of Mines and to the Coroner.

Similarly, on 25 May 2009 at an underground gold mine in Central Queensland, a worker and his loader fell into an open hole on a drive. The operator received lacerations and a fractured shoulder.
