Safety spotlight shines on Xstrata after young man dies

NT WORKSAFE officers are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man at an Xstrata’s McArthur River mine.

Police say the man died at the mine located 900km southeast of Darwin, Northern Territory on 21 August 2009.

Authorities believe the death to be a workplace incident but would not reveal details of how the incident occurred or where it occurred inside the mine.

NT WorkSafe officers are preparing for a coronial inquiry into the incident.
