BHP Billiton has lower iron ore production this fiscal year on the spate of safety incidents at its operations.

Ian Ashby, president of the Melbourne-based company’s iron ore unit says the company will miss a previous guidance by a few million tonnes because of accidents at its Western Australian mines.

There were five fatal accidents since July 2007. Additionally, the mining company has received 70 safety-related notices in the past two years.

BHP had expected to produce 130 million metric tonnes of iron ore for the year to 30 June.
