Safety impacts BHP’s bottom line

BHP Billiton says the spate of safety incidents that occurred at BHP operations has contributed to its weak March quarter production results.

The miner says the weakening economy, bad weather and delayed projects have also resulted in weaker production of its key commodities in the March quarter compared to the December quarter.

The accidents that occurred at the miner’s operations meant that production was suspended.

BHP Billiton will deliver a detailed report into its Pilbara safety practices to Western Australia's state mining engineer in late April 2009, following a string of five deaths since the start of the financial year.
