Safety goggles go walking

MINERS at a Rio Tinto Energy America (RTEA) mine have been running up a hefty bill by running off with free safety glasses.

As workplace health and safety standards improve across the globe, there has been an increasing trend to issue miners with free goggles.

According to management at the U.S coal mine, workers regularly grabbing new glasses instead of re-using them has pushed its safety bill through the roof.

Staff now have to enter an employee card and PIN before they can take off with a new pair.

Rio is pushing to introduce the system to its Australian mines.
