Safety alert issued following backhoe incident

THE Queensland Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has issued a safety alert after a worker was injured in a backhoe accident.

According to the DME, the worker was crushed between a handrail and steel structure when a backhoe forced a boom onto him when lifting a floor plate into position.

The DME says evasive action by the backhoe operator prevented a more serious outcome.

The department is urging miners to ensure appropriate machinery is used for selected tasks and to test machine stability and ground conditions prior to lifting operations.

The incident is being investigated by the NSW DPI Investigation Unit.
