SAFE Work Australia Week (SWAW) will be held this year from 19 to 25 October to stress the importance of safety awareness and action.

According to the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC), more than 250 people die from work-related incidents each year, with even more losing their lives to long term diseases.

SWAW encourages mines to drive safety campaigns throughout their operations and get staff involved in safety activities.

The government initiative also aims to promote inventions and innovations in safety.

A Safety Conference will be held in Sydney from 28 to 30 October 2008, showcasing a range of workshops and case studies relating to workplace safety.
