LEGISLATION setting up a new workplace safety body has been introduced to federal Parliament.

The Safe Work Australia body will help resolve inconsistencies in occupational health and safety and workers’ compensation laws across Australia.

Employment and Workplace Relations Minister, Julia Gillard, says current systems are unnecessarily complex and costly.

The new body will develop codes of practice, compliance and enforcement rules, and reform workers’ compensation laws.

Safe Work Australia succeeds the Howard government's Australian Safety and Compensation Council.
