Safe Work Australia Bill reaches stand-still

DISAGREEMENTS between the government and the Senate may delay a new workplace safety and workers’ compensation scheme.

Workplace Relations Minister, Julia Gillard, rejected amendments to a bill to set up a new body, Safe Work Australia (SWA), hailing them as unacceptable.

Gillard says the proposed amendments would change what the Commonwealth had agreed at a previous workplace relations meeting.

The Safe Work body is hoped to harmonise occupational health and safety rules across Australia to ensure the social and economic health of workplaces.

The disagreement may delay the compensation scheme for months, and if necessary, the government may not proceed with the system.
