Risk-taking culture challenges mining safety

A RISK-TAKING culture and ageing workforce have been identified as key safety challenges within Tasmania's mining industry.

Manager of Copper Mines of Tasmania, Scott Clyde, says the workforce is ageing as younger people avoid ‘dirty trades’ and the uncertainty of a boom and bust industry.

A committee currently investigating mining regulations is proposing mining-specific safety rules and uniform national standards.

Clyde supports the suggestions, and says changing the industry's culture is the biggest safety challenge.

He says the mining industry traditionally attracted people not afraid to take risks, and the older workforce has entrenched views on safety.
