Rio Tinto puts safety above mining operations

RIO Tinto says its iron ore operations have been affected by heavy rains and high winds but its first priority is safety.

The miners unloading and export operations in Australia's Pilbara region have been impeded by flooding along the 80 kilometre road separating Rio's two main ports.

The company says the weather made it difficult to access Dampier and Cape Lambert ports, which it uses to unload up to a half million tonnes of ore daily.

Parts of the Pilbara have received up to 150 millimetres and it's still raining very heavily there.

Australia's Meteorology Bureau on 16 February 2009 issued a warning for flash flooding and damaging winds in the western Pilbara.
