RIO Tinto Alcan has been fined almost $200,000 for exposing mining workers to certain risks and subsequently jeopardising their safety.
The court found the mining company responsible for an incident wherein a worker slipped and fell into a pool of highly corrosive liquid at a refinery in the Northern Territory in March 2008.
Fred Rowe, suffered burns to almost 25% of his body when he slipped and fell after a safety walkway was removed for maintenance.
Rio Tinto Alcan pleaded guilty to breaching the Mining Management Act.
NT WorkSafe executive director Laurene Hull says the fine should remind all mine operators that workplace safety must come first.
