A RANGE of refuge chambers for preserving life in underground mining emergencies will be showcased at the Goldfields Mining Expo (GME) in October 2008.

Strata Safety will showcase the steel chambers, which feature 48 hour back-up battery and air supply in case of power failure.

According to the company, the units have filtration systems that cleanse air in the chamber to prevent carbon dioxide and heat build-up.

The models are equipped with drinking water, padded seats, air-conditioning, lighting, and a chemical toilet.

The Goldfields Mining Expo will kick off at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club from 28 October 2008.
