Queensland seeks mine inspectors from abroad

THE QUEENSLAND government is broadening its search for mines inspectors beyond Australian borders to boost health and safety in its mines.

Twelve new inspectors are set to join the state’s team, bringing the total number to 46.

While two inspectors have recently been recruited from within Australia, Mines and Energy Minister (DME), Geoff Wilson, says the mining boom is making it harder to find Australian assessors.

The recruitment campaign focuses on coal and metalliferous inspectors in the United Kingdom and India, in a bid to attract the most experienced and qualified staff.

Wilson says the new recruits will benefit from an improved training and remuneration program to ensure the next generation of inspectors maintain the state’s high health and safety standards.
