Queensland opposition will scrap mine safety: DME

QUEENSLAND’S world-class mining safety standards will be lost if the opposition comes to power, according to the Mines and Energy Minister.

The claims follow comments in Parliament by the opposition about the new industry health and safety levy.

The funding aims to boost safety and health services within the state by promoting the Mines Inspectorate.

However, if appointed, the opposition will make cuts to mine safety spending in Queensland, which may eliminate these services.

Queensland currently boasts “the best mine safety legislation in Australia and one of the best mine safety records in the world”, according to the DME.

The department has stressed the importance of maintaining these standards.
