AT a time when mine safety seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue the Queensland government has stepped up and appointed seven new mine inspectors.

The State Government says it will do whatever it can to ensure it creates the safest mining environments possible for mine workers to work in.

According to Mines Minister Stephen Robertson, there have been some vacancies at its mines inspectorate for some time. He says they had trouble recruiting to those positions because the mining industry was going though such a boom period.

The intake includes three new coal inspectors in Rockhampton, one coal inspector in Mackay, a metalliferous inspector in Mount Isa and two Brisbane-based inspectors.

Robertson says the positions will play an integral part of the mine industry's drive towards zero harm.
