THE MINING Industry Skills Centre has unveiled a games-based simulation training tool to boost mine site safety and minimise risk.

Project Canary is a learning technology tool that enables users to apply risk assessment skills while encouraging behavioural change and safe working practices.

It creates virtual environments populated by miners, equipment, tools and objects that promote self assessment on how safety knowledge is applied.

The simulator currently includes scenarios for coal and metalliferous surface mining, as well as coal underground mining, with plans to develop metalliferous underground, quarrying and drilling environments.

Experts believe it provides an engaging learning methodology that will fuel training innovation in the mining industry.
