Poor mining safety leaves widow wanting support

WIDOWER Helen Fitzroy says that mining companies do not offer adequate support for the families of miners left behind and are literally not paying the price for poor mining safety.

Fitzroy’s husband was killed in a rockfall at a gold mine in Norseman in Western Australia in 1990. She and her two young children were left behind.

The widow claims she spent years dealing with the responsible miner through the court system trying to get the compensation she was owed.

Fitzroy is campaigning for the establishment of a special agency which would offer support to families that are severely impacted by mine fatalities.
