THE Queensland Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has released a safety alert after a pontoon capsized at an Australian mine site.

A worker was servicing a pontoon-mounted pump when the pontoon listed to one side and capsized.

According to management, the incident was inevitable as water that had entered the pontoon’s flotation chamber.

The miner, who was wearing the required safety gear, managed to escape without injury.

The DME is urging all mines to audit pontoon mounted pumps and check hull integrity to prevent pontoons from capsizing and sinking.

The department is also urging managers to ensure sufficient safety procedures are in place should accidents occur.
