A NUMBER of mining officials have been prosecuted following the death of a miner at an exploration site in Queensland in 2006.

A mine operator, site senior executive and equipment supplier pleaded guilty to breaches of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 on 28 October 2008 following the death of Noel Lovell on 27 October 2006.

The mine operator was fined $10,000 as well as investigation and legal costs, while the site senior executive and vehicle supplier were both fined upwards of $5,000.

The Mines Inspectorate issued a safety alert titled “Fatality involving Hitachi LX100 Series 1 Wheel Loader” following the incident, which is available at: www.dme.qld.gov.au/mines/mines_safety_alerts.cfm.
