Official warning for mines using truck-loading systems

NSW Department of Primary Industries mine safety operations branch director Rob Regan has issued a warning for all mines with truck-loading systems using a storage bin and automatic or radio remote-control systems.

Regan says such sites should undergo a hazard-identification procedure on these systems and review and assess the risks, particularly if the truck cabin passes under the bin discharge.

He also recommended the review of the effectiveness of operator protection on trucks using these bin delivery systems as well as of the electrical and mechanical-engineering control systems.

The warning follows the recent death of a coal-reject-truck driver at Xstrata Coal’s Ravensworth longwall mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.
