New safety code “won’t change mining operations”

THE Tasmanian Minerals Council says a new code of practice to promote safe mining practices will not change the way its mines operate.

The code, which came into practice on 5 November 2008, includes recommendations from coronial inquests into the deaths of three miners at the Renison tin mine in 2001.

The code requires mines to meet Australian standards to ensure mining operations are responsible and safe.

Minerals Council spokesperson, Terry Long, says the standards are already recognised across the state and will not change the way mines operate.

"The fact that those standards are now codified will not make a lot of difference in the operations of day-to-day operations of everyday mining operations because people reference them in any case," Long said.
