THE Department of Mines and Energy’s (DME) will recruit 25 staff for its safety and health department to meet increased demand and expand its range of services.

Seven mine inspectors will be appointed to regional Queensland to improve conditions in the small mining sector.

The program has prompted a restructure of the health surveillance unit to identify health trends before they have a serious impact on the industry.

The staffing increases will be funded by the industry’s new safety levy. The department says its initiative represents an important step towards the goal of zero harm in the mining sector.
