THE Queensland Department of Mines and Energy’s (DME) safety and health department has welcomed the manager of its newly formed Health Surveillance Unit (HSU).

Occupational hygienist, Gerard Tiernan, will head the force, drawing from his 20 years of experience in the mining industry.

The new department focuses on occupational health for Queensland miners and quarry workers. It aims to identify and address inadequately controlled mine site hazards.

The HSU also develops resources to facilitate training in occupational health.
