NEW legislation has been introduced to improve protection for temporary overseas miners in Australia.

The Migration Legislation Amendment Bill 2008 will strengthen temporary working visa arrangements and involve a new framework to protect overseas workers from exploitation.

As part of the new law, specially trained officers will investigate workplaces to determine whether employers are complying with revised regulations and standards.

It is hoped the bill will boost employment conditions and workplace health and safety standards.

Fines of up to $33 000 are proposed for employers found in breach of the migration regulations.
