Minister says safety will not be sacrificed for uranium development

MINES and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore has welcomed reports of a new uranium development but says that the government will not sacrifice health and safety with a ‘develop at all costs’ mentality.

BHP Billiton plans to develop the $17billion Yeelirrie uranium deposit, 500km north of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia.

Moore says that the development will create jobs and help to build the state economy.

The Minister claims that it is encouraging in this time of global economic downturn that the resource sector is gearing up and developing alternative revenue streams for the state.

However, Moore claims that the most stringent health and safety measures and the world’s best practice environmental standards will apply to any proposed uranium development and to the handling and transportation of yellowcake.
