Mining risks Ipswich Motorway safety

A MAIN Roads geotechnical study has revealed that the Ipswich Motorway could collapse into disused mine shafts.

The road authority says that a production plant will now be built close-by to mix huge quantities of gravel and cement to be poured into the empty tunnels.

The tunnels formed part of abandoned coal mines at Redbank between Dinmore and Goodna, which may cause the new six-lane stretch of motorway to subside. The news means that the cost of upgrading part of the motorway has soared from $1.1b to almost $2b.

State Opposition roads spokeswoman Fiona Simpson says the cost variation was unacceptable and that the Queensland Government is now getting a reputation for not costing their projects properly.
