SPEAKERS at the opening of the annual Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference in Townsville claimed that the heath and safety of miners was important to the city.

Member for Thuringowa and Minister for Main Roads Craig Wallace said that many mineworkers chose to base themselves in the region, which helps to support the local economy and also provides essential services to the industry.

About 600 people have converged on Townsville for the conference.

Stewart Bell, chairman of the conference and the Queensland Government’s Mine Safety and Health Commissioner, claims that the good attendance testified to the strong commitment to health and safety of industry, government and mining unions.

Commissioner Bell says that the 2009 conference will focus on how we can provide the tools and deliver the mindset to keep the workplace safe and healthy.

The conference is hosted jointly by the Queensland Government, the Queensland Resources Council and mining unions the CFMEU and AWU.
