Minesweep Operation: Witch hunt or serious mine safety concern

DESPITE Police finding no mine workers in possession of drugs on their recent ‘Minesweep Operation’, authorities are pushing all WA mines to adopt a zero-tolerance drug policy.

Police say they are advocating no tolerance because it would improve mine safety.

Authorities say while no people were caught in possession, the sniffer dogs detected the scent of illegal substances on many incidences.

The Australian Workers Union secretary Stephen Price says he does not back calls for a zero-tolerance drug policy at all mining operations as he believes it will drive it underground and more people would be prepared to take the risk.
