Miners will pay for safety

MINING companies will foot most of the $40 million bill each year for Western Australia’s newly announced state safety overhaul.

Moore says the industry itself should fund the majority of the cost of regulating safety in their industry.

The taxpayer already pays $18 million a year to manage safety in the mining, petroleum and dangerous goods industries and there is no contribution by industry.

While most miners are angered by the cost—recovery reform, Moore says a similar system already existed in New South Wales and Queensland.

Moore says the recent spike in mine site-related fatalities is unacceptable and has contributed to the need for urgent action.
