RESCUE workers have pulled 32 miners from a flooded coal shaft in China after they were trapped underground for 23 hours.

According to officials, water flooded into the shaft of the Gaomendong mine in Henan’s Jiaxian province early on 17 November 2008 while 42 miners were underground.

The miners were rushed to a local hospital in “bad health”, with one miner confirmed dead and another missing.

The mine owner did not report the accident for more than two hours and failed to lodge earlier reports regarding the poor condition of the mine.

The mine was licensed for 28 people to work at one time, and safety officials are attributing the incident to “mining against operation procedures and loose supervision of production”.
