MINES and Petroleum and Fisheries Minister Norman Moore will hold immediate talks with senior public servants following today’s tabling of the Auditor General’s reports into the Department of Mines and Petroleum and the Department of Fisheries.

One of the reports claimed the Department of Mines and Petroleum was issuing licenses to handle dangerous goods without subjecting applicants to background checks which has raised safety concerns.

Moore says he expects senior officials from the two agencies to explain issues raised by the reports and to address the problems identified by the Auditor General.

The Minister says that the respective agencies will be required to implement those recommendations - recognising that this process has already begun in respect to a number of the problems identified by the report.

Moore says that in some cases the view of the departments differed from the conclusions drawn by the Auditor General.

However, he expects that valid concerns raised by the Auditor General will be dealt with and resolved as quickly as possible by the relevant department.
