Mine fatality prompts safety alert

THE Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has issued a safety alert after a worker was crushed between a light vehicle and a man basket.

The worker was killed when he was struck by a man basket attached to an integrated tool carrier that was being driven toward the rear of a stationary utility.

The DME is urging mines to optimise communication between mobile equipment operators and pedestrians and reduce the risk of personnel being struck, caught or crushed by equipment.

The Department says operator training must reinforce general rules concerning the positioning of staff when mobile equipment is operating around or nearby.

The DME says consideration should also be given to proximity sensing technology to limit mobile equipment operation when persons are in the area.
