JOHN Holland has been disqualified from the Safe Work Australia Awards 2008 after a worker died at the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal in north Queensland in 2008.

Mark McCallum, 34, died after being run over by machinery while working at the Terminal in north when his foot became trapped under wooden scaffolding planks while moving precast concrete decks.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) says it seems extraordinary that a company which had a worker killed on one of their jobs should even consider submitting its work for a national safety award.

The finalist for the 2008 Award have been announced and an independent judging panel will now consider each finalist’s award submission and the winners will be announced on World Day for Health and Safety at Work on 28 April 2009.

The hearing into McCullum’s death is set down for 11 March 2009.
