A 24-year-old man has died after jumping from a 40m cliff at an abandoned mine in Brisbane’s southwest on 02 November 2008.

According to the Department of Mines and Energy (DME), a group of males illegally entered the Bogside opencut mine in Redbank Plains and jumped from the mine’s highwall into water at the bottom of the pit.

The youths contacted police after one of them did not surface from the jump.

Police divers later recovered his body and are continuing to investigate the incident.

The DME is urging mines to check the security of their sites and the deterrence value of their fences.
