Lung disease on the rise in Australia

THE Australian Lung Foundation has released a report showing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is on the rise in Australia.

A number of studies have found types of mining dust including silica, coal dust and asbestos contribute to respiratory outcomes such as chronic obstructive lung disease and COPD.

According to the report, over two million Australians are currently affected by COPD, which is expected to escalate to nearly five million by 2050.

COPD is a long-term lung disease which causes shortness of breath, and includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Although there is no cure, experts say it can be managed if identified in its early stages.

The Lung Foundation says early diagnosis and improved access to treatment may help to combat the disease. Diagnosis is possible through a simple lung function test, and can be conducted at any medical practitioner’s office.
